North Strabane’s new garbage collection company won’t be taken out with the trash any time soon.
Township officials said during their Tuesday night meeting that they have noticed a major improvement by Republic Services after
Residents were complaining about the company’s performance since North Strabane awarded the garbage collection contract to Republic beginning in January. The Republic contract bid was about $8 less per household annually than what Waste Management offered the township.
Township officials spent most of their meeting last month criticizing John McGoran, Republic’s manager of municipal services, for the lack of service. However, they praised McGoran and the company during their Tuesday night workshop meeting.
“It seems like you’re on the upswing,” Supervisor Robert Balogh said.
The amount of complaints streaming in from residents decreased in the weeks after McGoran promised to make changes and improve service. The township received three complaints during one week, but has typically heard only one complaint a week from residents over the past month.
McGoran previously blamed the bulk of the service complaints on the harsh winter and communication problems. He said they have worked to correct the problems and have responded directly to residents, when needed.
“I think we’ve made some progress since the last time we spoke,” McGoran said. “We want to make sure this is sustainable.”
The supervisors said they were pleased with the improvements and indicated they would not be searching for a new contractor in the near future.
