PITTSBURGH – Pennsylvania officials are warning consumers about bottled water they said is contaminated with total coliform and E. coli bacteria.

Officials said customers should not use three-, four- and five-gallon jugs of Tyler Mountain water that was bottled April 17 and 18.

The water is distributed by Pittsburgh-based Aqua Filter Fresh. A company spokesman said about 9,400 bottles were affected, but only half were delivered to customers.

State Department of Environmental Protection spokesman John Poister said the company’s ultraviolet disinfecting system was malfunctioning when the water was bottled.

Aqua Filter Fresh issued a statement Saturday saying it notified consumers of the problem immediately. According to its website, the company serves Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

E. coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms of illness.
