Canon-McMillan School Board will hold a special meeting Monday to move forward with property acquisition for the eventual construction of a new middle school.
Superintendent Michael Daniels said Monday’s meeting is mostly a formality so the district can apply for project reimbursement through the state Department of Education’s PlanCon process. He said it also will be an opportunity for residents to comment on the plan for a new middle school, which will be the second or third phase in a larger facilities plan that includes a new elementary school and high school expansion.
The board on June 26 approved a purchase and sales agreement for 27 acres of property owned by LSREF2 Baron LLC on Route 519, across from Sedeca Road. Board members also authorized site engineering services for both the elementary and middle school projects, as well as traffic engineering studies and lot consolidation for the elementary school site.
Cecil Township recently approved an exemption to allow the district to construct a new elementary school near the current Muse Elementary School. The property had been rezoned into a residential district and needed township approval for another school to be built there.
Daniels said the district had planned these projects before the state announced last month that a moratorium on PlanCon projects had been lifted, but he said the recent development is good news for Canon-McMillan. He said the district must hold a public meeting on the construction project and submit the meeting minutes in order to be considered for reimbursement through PlanCon.
Daniels said the elementary school plan is the district’s top priority, followed by the construction of a new middle school and a high school expansion project. He said the district would not wait to complete the elementary project before moving on to other phases of the project.
“Our plan is to continue to move forward, because our population is growing,” Daniels said.
The new elementary school will replace Muse, Cecil and First Street elementary schools, but all will remain open until the new school is complete.
The building, estimated to cost close to $30 million, is expected to include eight kindergarten classrooms, 26 regular classrooms and additional special-needs classrooms.
Monday’s meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in the administration building, and it will be followed by the board’s regular voting meeting at 7 p.m.
