WAYNESBURG – It’s not every day that a young man has the opportunity to learn from a former professional NFL player – certainly not in Waynesburg.
But, that’s the opportunity for the first 40 young men ages 10 to 15 who sign-up for the Father and Son Camp East and register for an exclusive mini-football clinic with former NFL safety/cornerback Ray McElroy, whose career included time playing for both the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions.
The clinic, offering one-to-one tips and developmental techniques for going to the next level, will be featured Oct. 4 in the midst of a larger four-day camp held Oct. 2 to 5 at the Strath an De’ Farm. Last year, fathers and campers came from as far away as Georgia.
“There’s nothing like a weekend alone in the great outdoors with your dad, cooking over a campfire, sharing a tent and making memories that will last a lifetime,” said Jim Butler, event organizer.
Campers will have individual campsites and fire-rings (firewood provided), complete with basic camping amenities. Additional activities planned include rappelling, knife throwing, hiking, paintball, a rifle and archery range, clay pigeon shooting, birdhouse crafting, an expanded obstacle course, frisbee golf and a 200-foot zip line through the woods.
A team of cadets from the International ALERT Academy, headquartered in Texas, will assist in the weekend activities, teaching rappelling and providing an obstacle course for campers.
Additionally, three evening meals will be provided to father-and-son campers.
Norm Wakefield, a national speaker and founder of Elijah Ministries, will be the 2014 Father and Son Camp East featured speaker. Wakefield will be joined by McElroy, who will offer an encouraging message to sons during Friday evening’s activities.
The Father and Son Camp East is a Christian, not-for-profit event that is run by donations. While donations from campers are helpful, there is not a specified cost for participating. However, paintball equipment rental does come at an additional cost. For campers who do not own paintball equipment, full equipment may be rented on-site for $20 per afternoon. Campers may also purchase balls and carbon dioxide for an additional charge.
“Many are surprised that attendance is not based on a payment,” said Butler. “Yes, expenses are great,” he said. Those with the resources may send a donation with their application or contribute in the donation box at the camp. However, a donation is not a prerequisite to attend. It is just that, a donation.
Registration and applications for camp attendance are encouraged to be submitted by Sept. 15. Late registrations are accepted, space permitting.
