DA refiles charges in girlfriend’s bloody killing

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania prosecutor has refiled criminal homicide and murder charges that a district judge dismissed against a man in the bludgeoning death of his live-in girlfriend.
District Judge Michael Mahady dismissed those charges Wednesday against 57-year-old Gregory Randall, of Laurel Mountain, saying a bloody handprint matched to him from the crime scene was “speculative” because DNA tests on whose blood it was are still pending.
Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck contends Gregory bludgeoned 52-year-old Angela Cavalero with a wine bottle and a hammer more than two dozen times in May. Peck argued there was no reason to believe blood at the horrific scene was anyone’s but Cavalero’s — even before the DNA results.
Randall has repeatedly said he doesn’t remember killing Cavalero and doesn’t believe he would have.
He faces another preliminary hearing Aug. 22.
