Two people were able to escape their McDonald home Wednesday night when the basement caught fire.

McDonald firefighters were called about 11:25 p.m. to the three-story frame home at 139 Station St.

The resident was reportedly working on the furnace in the basement of his home when he knocked over a can of paint thinner, said Rich Phillips, second assistant chief. The resident then turned on a fan and the paint thinner ignited.

The fire was contained to the basement, although there was smoke and water damage in the rest of the house.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Cecil No. 3 and Mt. Pleasant townships, Midway and Sturgeon.
