A nonprofit organization trying to restore the historic Coyle Theater in Charleroi does not have to pay a $7,250 bill from an architect hired by a former president of the group, a district judge ruled Monday.

District Judge Larry Hopkins issued the ruling in the case filed by Phoenixville architect Thomas W. Carnevale, who filed the suit in small claims court in July against the Mid Mon Valley Cultural Trust, claiming he was due the payment for creating concept drawings for the closed theater, which dates to the 1890s.

Carnevale decline comment on the hearing’s outcome. He has a month to appeal the ruling to Washington County Court.

Trust President Melanie Patterson said the group is eager to move on and focus on raising money to restore the Coyle.

“After careful review of the official administrative records and files turned over to us in June, we have found that nothing is mentioned in the official minutes of the corporation (indicating) appropriate board review … or a vote thereof for any payments to be made to this architect,” she said.
