State police are reminding drivers of the school bus stopping law as the new school year begins for students.

Drivers should stop at least 10 feet from buses that have red lights flashing and the stop arm extended. Drivers must stop if they are behind the bus, meeting the bus or approaching the intersection where a bus is stopped.

Drivers following alongside a bus also must stop until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. If there are barriers such as medians or guard rails, drivers in the opposing lane do not have to stop. Drivers may not proceed until the children have reached a place of safety.

Police will be monitoring bus routes and stops.
