A Smith Township woman was charged by township police with simple assault and endangering the welfare of children after she allegedly assaulted a 9-year-old girl last month.

Claudette Mangan, 52, of 16 Shin Hill St., Joffre, is accused of assaulting the girl July 25 inside the home Mangan shares with the girl’s grandfather, who has custody of the girl and her brother, police said.

Mangan was in the bedroom while the girl and several other relatives were in the kitchen of the home. When the girl asked her grandfather for permission to sleep over at an aunt’s house, she reportedly started arguing with him when told she was not permitted to go.

Police said Mangan came into the kitchen and reportedly yelled at the girl and pushed her in the stomach across the living room and into the girl’s bedroom.

An aunt took the other children outside and away from the confrontation. The aunt told police she could hear screaming. When the aunt went into the bedroom, she pulled Mangan off the girl, police said.

The girl was reportedly treated at the scene for red marks and scratches. She spent the night at a relative’s home.

After speaking with Mangan, police took her to a home in Midway.

Washington County Children and Youth Services also responded.

The charges were sent by summons from the office of District Judge Gary Havelka. Mangan is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 25 before Havelka.
