PERRYOPOLIS (AP) – Police say a Southwestern Pennsylvania man died in an accident when flooding washed out a section of road.

Authorities say 37-year-old Thomas Whipkey of Perryopolis died about 1 a.m. Saturday after torrential rain washed out a road in Fayette County. State police say he didn’t realize the road was no longer there as he drove in the darkness.

Another motorist discovered the washed out roadway on her way to work the next morning. Workers found Whipkey’s car in a culvert 27 feet below the roadway, according to the police report. Whipkey wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and he suffered a fatal head injury.
