Washington police determined a head-on collision Monday morning occurred when an 82-year-old driver crossed the center barrier around a curve and struck another vehicle.

According to a police report released Tuesday, Patrick Haggerty Sr., 82, of Equity Drive, South Franklin Township, was driving on West Maiden Street toward Jefferson Avenue about 10 a.m. when he crossed into the opposing lane of traffic and struck a vehicle driven by Andrea Sharp, 18, of Wellington Avenue, Washington.

Rita Haggerty, 76, also of Equity Drive, was a front-seat passenger in the car with Patrick Haggerty. Both were in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian Tuesday afternoon.

Sharp was taken by ambulance to a Pittsburgh hospital. Her condition was unknown. She was not a patient at UPMC or Allegheny Health Network hospitals Tuesday afternoon.

One witness told police Sharp was driving on the wrong side of the road, but four other witnesses said it was Haggerty’s vehicle that crossed the center line. Two of those witnesses were Joseph and Denise Sharp, who were driving behind Andrea Sharp.

Police said Patrick Haggerty appeared to be in normal physical condition, and alcohol and drugs were not suspected as factors. No vehicle failures have been determined at this time.
