South Strabane Township police are alerting residents after a man claiming to represent an alarm company tried to con his way into the home of an elderly woman over the weekend.

The woman, who is in her 80s, told township police Sgt. Drew Hilk Monday a man appeared at the front door of her home in the 200 block of Oak Hill Drive about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, claiming to represent her alarm company.

She told police the man kept trying to talk his way into her home as she spoke with him through the locked screen door of her residence. At one point, he put his hand on the handle of the screen door and turned it.

He reportedly told the woman her alarm system was vulnerable and needed repaired, adding it works on the telephone system and the line could be cut.

He was persistent in his attempts to get into the home. He left, telling her that he would return Wednesday. Hilk said she did not allow the man to enter his home.

The man had parked in front of her home. He was driving a newer model, red pickup truck, similar to a Ford Ranger.

The man claiming to be the alarm company representative was white, in his late 20s to early 30s, 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a very slender build. He wore a mostly white ball cap with an insignia, khaki slacks and a short-sleeved work shirt.

The woman contacted her alarm company, learning no representative was sent to her home. She was also told any representative would call before coming to her home for a service call.
