MAPLETOWN – The Southeastern Greene School Board Monday acted on several personnel matters, and then recessed the meeting until 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
The board hired secondary math teachers Jeremy Burnsworth and Ashley Hull and accepted the resignations of Anthony Battaglini, high school social studies teacher and Lauren Scabilloni, elementary special education teacher.
Janice Kovach, Melanie Berklovich and Courtney Shields were added to the professional substitute list. Tina Gresko, Zachary Muzichuck and Alex Gallatin were added to the nonprofessional substitute list. A sabbatical leave was approved for fourth-grade teacher Melissa Swarrow and Lori Sagosky was hired as a long-term professional substitute to fill the position in Swarrow’s absence.
Under athletics and activities, three volunteer coaches were approved. Ken Adams and Nicholas Hein were accepted as volunteer middle school football coaches and Gina Perry as a volunteer girls softball coach.
The board approved a purchase of a SMALLab (Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab) from SMALLab Learning, LLC, at a cost not to exceed $35,000. A STEAM (Science, Technology the Arts and Mathematics) grant in the amount of $20,000 has been obtained to offset the cost of the purchase. This technology physically immerses students into the subject matter they are learning in a multi-dimensional format through the use of surround sound speakers and projectors that combine to create a virtual classroom environment.
The board reported the district currently has four openings available, including foreign language instructor, special education/life skills, social studies and high school principal. The special education position is for the secondary level but requires an elementary certification as well. The ideal candidate for the foreign language instructor position would possess multiple certifications in languages. However, a minimum of Spanish with at least one additional language certification would be considered, said district Superintendent Richard Pekar.
The board is hoping to have candidates in place for consideration by the Sept. 8 reconvened meeting.
