Warrior Trail Association will host a presentation by Mary Beth Pastorius, who will display nearly 100 historic photographs of downtown Waynesburg and explain the town’s development from its very beginning in 1796 through the mid-20th century. The public is invited.

The meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Hartley Inn in Carmichaels.

She will identify dates and styles of buildings and talk about the owners, craftsmen, architects and materials that created them. Since 2008, she has researched Waynesburg architecture, supported by a Sprout Fund grant. She authored a brochure entitled “Rediscovering Eden” that will be distributed at the meeting. It is also available at the Greene County Tourism Office and is a self-guided walking tour of the town.

In addition to architectural research, Pastorius invests in “bricks-and-mortar” projects in Waynesburg, her hometown. She is completing rehabilitation of two key buildings at the corner of High and Morgan streets.

For more than 30 years, she has collaborated with Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, the National Trust, Preservation Pennsylvania and Sewickley Valley Historical Society to research historic sites and create brochures, articles, tours and exhibitions. She is a trustee of PHLF and was named “Sewickley Woman of the Year” in 1990 for her research contributions to an exhibition and book on the nationally important firm of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow.

Pastorius and her late husband, Thomas, founded Penn Brewery in 1986, the second oldest microbrewery in the eastern United States. It is located on Pittsburgh’s North Side in historic German brewery buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. At Penn Brewery, she learned the economic value of preservation.

Pastorius would like to share the program with other community and school groups. She also offers downtown walking tours which can be scheduled by calling 724-833-1513.
