PITTSBURGH (AP) – A Pittsburgh firm that is working with Carnegie Mellon University to put a lunar rover on the moon next year is trying to fund the rocket trip by letting people “mail” personal keepsakes to the moon.

Astrobotic Technology leased a rocket built by a private California firm, Space X, to get its lunar rover to the moon.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the company launched Moonmail.co, a website that lets people sign up to send their keepsakes to the moon. The money people spend for their tiny Moonmail packages – $460 to $25,800 depending on the size – will help Astrobotic fund the rocket launch.

Astrobotic and CMU are trying to get their lunar rover to the moon to win $20 million in a contest sponsored by the internet search engine company, Google.
