Pa. man charged with 1990 slaying of Virginia Beach woman

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – Police charged a Pennsylvania man with the slaying of a Virginia Beach woman more than two decades ago.
Virginia Beach police said Thursday that 46-year-old Robert William Malick of Erie is charged with second-degree murder in the 1990 death of 17-year-old Joan Schoppaul.
Schoppaul’s body was found Dec. 5, 1990, in a dumpster behind a former supermarket. The body was wrapped in a sleeping bag. She was last seen the previous morning.
Police said cold case detectives used advanced technology and current forensic techniques to identify a suspect.
Malick was arrested in Pennsylvania earlier this week. He is awaiting extradition to Virginia Beach.
