WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — State environmental officials in Pennsylvania have announced an $800,000 settlement with a gas pipeline company for what they called illegal dumpsites in four northern Pennsylvania counties during construction of a pipeline in 2011 and 2012.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company will pay a $210,000 penalty and fund a $540,000 program to clean up the sites in Pike, Potter, Susquehanna and Wayne counties, as well as paying $50,000 in recovery funds to four conservation districts and the department.

Mike Bedrin, the department’s northeast regional director, said the penalty would get rid of what he called “unsightly and illegal dumpsites” and provide money for the state clean water fund to protect waterways in the commonwealth.

A company spokesman didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.
