PENN HILLS, Pa. (AP) — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say an elderly woman was found dead following an early morning fire on Christmas morning.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office was called to the scene of the blaze that was reported at 5:30 a.m. Christmas morning in Penn Hills.

A county spokeswoman said a body tentatively identified as 74-year-old Norma McClain was found on the first-floor stairwell. A post-mortem examination is scheduled Friday.

Officials said, however, that initial reports that other people may have been in the residence “appear to be unfounded.”

The fire marshal’s office is trying to determine the cause of the blaze, which gutted the home and caused most of the roof to collapse.
