WAYNESBURG – Several criminal defendants pleaded guilty this month before the Greene County Court. They included:
Joseph James Dean II, 25, of 101 Sugar Camp Road, Waynesburg; offenses – possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Dean was arrested Aug. 7, 2013, in Cumberland Township. Police responding to a downed tree on a roadway saw Dean’s vehicle on a gas well access road and investigated. He was found to be in possession of a spoon with crack cocaine residue and a partial Subutex pill. The arrest resulted in a violation of Dean’s parole for a June 8, 2013 arrest for stealing copper wire from a West Penn Power substation in Whiteley Township; sentence – 30 days to 23 ½ months, $500 in fines plus court costs and fees, 100 hours of community service.
David Eugene Evans, 41, of 18 Linden Road, Looneyville, W.Va.; offenses – driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI incapable of safe driving and a summary traffic violation. Evans was arrested by Cumberland Township Police May 19, 2012, after his vehicle was observed weaving on Roy Furman Highway. His blood-alcohol content was 0.180 percent; sentence – pending pre-sentence investigation.
David Daniel Jones, 34, of 102 Second St., Vestaburg; offense – unsworn falsification to authorities. Jones was charged Feb. 25 after he attempted to purchase a firearm at the True Value Hardware Store in Dry Tavern. Jones indicated in the paperwork he had no prior convictions making him ineligible to own or possess a firearm. According to court documents, Jones has two felony convictions in Florida for strong arm robbery and burglary; sentence – one year probation, $1,000 fine plus court costs and fees, 150 hours of community service.
Michael Vukmanic, 31, 1044 Lippencott Road, Waynesburg; offense – unsworn falsification to authorities. Vukmanic was charged March 4 after he attempted to purchase a firearm at the True Value Hardware Store in Dry Tavern. Vukmanic indicated in the paperwork he had no prior convictions making him ineligible to own or possess a firearm. According to court documents, Vukmanic served four years probation on charges he forged several checks worth $170 Oct. 8, 2007; sentence – one year probation, $1,000 fine plus court costs and fees, 50 hours of community service.
Hector Manuel Flores, 57, of 337 Sckill Ave., Reading; offense – bad check; a theft by deception charge was dropped. Flores was charged Aug. 29, 2012, for writing a bad check to Nitin Patel of the Holiday Motel in Waynesburg. Patel told police Flores, a contractor, offered to do room renovations for $35,000. Patel gave him a check for $3,000 as a down payment and six days later Flores told him he could no longer do the work. Flores gave Patel a refund with a check from a closed bank account; sentence – 6 to 23 ½ months with credit for 17 days already served. The sentence is concurrent to a 63-day to 3-year sentence at SCI-Greene for theft charges out of Berks County from July. Flores was ordered to pay restitution to Patel of $2,600, $300 in fines plus court costs and fees. He previously paid $400 to Patel.
Junior “Sonny” Bert Hall, 44, of 441 Center St., Clarksville; offense – retail theft. Hall was arrested June 30 for stealing a two liter bottle of Pepsi from the BFS store in Jefferson. Police said Hall’s son placed nine cans of soda and candy on the counter. While the son was paying for it, Hall put the two liter bottle beneath the counter. After his son paid, Hall retrieved the bottle from below the counter and began to walk out with it. The clerk, who knew Hall, saw Hall leaving the store with the bottle. The bottle was valued at $1.99; sentence – one year of probation, $250 in fines plus court costs and fees totaling $1,211.50.
