Washington County Commission Chairman Larry Maggi was elected secretary-treasurer of Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, a 10-county planning agency, for a two-year term.
Maggi has represented Washington County on the commission since 2004. He has been a member of the board’s executive committee for the past three years.
Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission is the official metropolitan planning organization for the 10-county area, which means it is responsible for planning and prioritizing the use of state and federal money for transportation projects. It has, however, 11 members because Pittsburgh has a representative separate from that of Allegheny County.
The commission is also promoting a “buy local” agriculture initiatve. A meeting on this topic is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 11, in Exhibit Hall No. 2 at the county fairgrounds in Arden.
Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission is studying how to expand the market for local agricultural products, whether they be fruits, vegetables, beef, lamb or chicken, for example. All commercial customers for local agricultural customers are welcome to attend. Washington County Planning Commission has more information at 724-228-6811.
