Southwestern Pennsylvania Food Security Partnership, which brings together local partners to form the Summer Food Service Task Force, will hold a meeting March 3 at the Westmoreland Community College Education Center at EverGreene Technology Park to discuss the summer food program.

The meeting, from 10 a.m. to noon, and will include a discussion by partnership staff and local partners of the program, which provides meals to local youth during the summer months, and outreach efforts.

Local partners have included WWJD, Bowlby Library, Greene County Parks and Recreation, The Community Foundation of Greene County and the Central Greene, Carmichaels Area and West Greene school districts.

The community-led task force seeks to identify opportunities for expanding and improving the summer food service program in Greene County. Through the program, children and teens, 18 and younger, are able to receive free, nutritious meals during the summer months at sites throughout the county.

The program has grown since its inception in 2009. During the summer of 2013, more than 24,000 meals were served in the local community. Still, only a fraction of the eligible children are participating in the program, given that one in five Greene County children is food insecure.

The task force has planned the informational session to tell the story of the program in Greene County, and to receive feedback and support in the fight against childhood hunger.

Those who plan to attend the session are asked to register no later than Feb. 24 by sending an e-mail to kgross@pittsburghfoodbank.org or by calling 412-460-3663, extension 255.
