WAYNESBURG – During a routine inspection several weeks ago, above-normal gas levels were detected at the Medical Arts Building, adjacent to Southwest Regional Medical Center.

Gas levels are monitored regularly and the MAB is the only area impacted. No gas was detected in or around Southwest Regional Medical Center.

The Department of Environmental Protection, Public Utility Commission, Greene County Emergency Management and local gas companies are working to identify the source of the leak. So far, a definitive cause is not determined. In the meantime, the MAB was evacuated and a gas mitigation system is being installed.

This system should be functioning soon and the hospital is hoping reopen the facility. In the meantime, six physician practices, which are located in the MAB, have been temporarily relocated.

“We are doing everything possible and counting on the assistance of the DEP to identify the source of the problem,” explained Cindy Cowie, chief executive officer of Southwest Regional Medical Center. “We will do everything possible to ensure the safety of all involved.”
