Crews from Columbia Gas Co. are expected to start replacing ancient natural gas lines Monday in advance of work being done on the current phase of the Route 19 corridor project in Washington.

The lines being replaced date to about 1909, said Steve Zottola of Zottola Construction, the company doing the reconstruction work along Ridge, Murtland and Locust avenues. Gas crews also replaced lines when work was done on College and Lincoln streets as part of the first phase of the Route 19 project.

Gas company crews will start on Locust and try to stay ahead of the work being done by Zottola, said Roxanne Rossi, project manager for the state Department of Transportation.

Zottola will continue to do work on replacing water lines in the project area on behalf of Pennsylvania-American Water Co.

“We will be interrupting traffic flow for the next few weeks,” said Dean Sarver of Zottola. “Some drivers will be held up for a time, but we try to keep that to a minimum.”

Drivers going through the intersection of Ridge and Locust avenues will soon be getting a break of sorts as the signal on Locust will be shut down. Temporary signals will be installed as part of the work.

Work will start this week on the demolition of the former Highland Bar and Grill. Rossi said the company doing the demolition has had difficulty getting in and out of the site to dump the waste because of the weather. Sarver said the demolition should continue for another month.
