The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is inviting visitors to celebrate the Commonwealth’s 333rd birthday on Charter Day, March 9, with free admission to many historic sites and museums along the Pennsylvania Trails of History, including the Fort Pitt Museum in Pittsburgh.

Other Western Pennsylvania sites not charging an admission fee that day include Old Economy Village, Ambridge; the Drake Well Museum, Titusville; and the Erie Maritime Museum and Flagship Niagara.

Charter Day celebrates the founding of Pennsylvania in 1681.

In eastern Pennsylvania, this day will give visitors a rare opportunity to see the original Charter of Pennsylvania written during the reign of England’s King Charles II to grant land to William Penn. It is sometimes referred to as Pennsylvania’s birth certificate.

This year the Penn Charter will be on display at William Penn’s home, Pennsbury Manor in Morrisville, Bucks County, from March 9-16.

More information on Charter Day 2014 and more than a dozen Pennsylvania Trails of History sites included in the free admission day is available at www.PATrailsofHistory.com.
