The Washington County commissioners approved three matters dealing with public safety this week.

They agreed to pay a $500 in travel expenses for Ryan Frazee, emergency planning officer in the Public Safety Department, so he can inspect the county’s new hazardous materials truck at the V.T. Hackney Inc. plant in Washington, N.C.

“It was in the paint shop this week,” Frazee said Friday. Hackney is to deliver the truck within the next two weeks.

The board also approved the purchase of USB wireless internet service to be used by the Public Safety Department command post at a cost of $40 per month.

The board also approved Deputy Court Administrator Tom Jess’ application to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for grant of $67,660 in federal taxpayers’ money to purchase videoconferencing equipment for local police departments and the county jail, future site of a booking center for newly arrived prisoners.

If the county receives the grant, the police departments designated to have the videoconferencing capabilities are Washington, Peters Township, Canonsburg, Monongahela, Donora, Charleroi Regional, South Strabane and McDonald regional.

The grant money would be spent between July 1 and June 30, 2015.
