Four school districts in Washington County and three in Greene County are among 110 public schools across the state receiving Safe Schools Targeted Grants to implement programs to prevent and reduce incidents of violence. The competitive grants, totaling $2.6 million, were announced Friday.

Receiving $25,000, the maximum grant award, were Central Greene, Jefferson-Morgan and Southeastern Greene school districts in Greene County, and Fort Cherry, Ringgold and Washington school districts in Washington County. Burgettstown Area School District received $6,965.

The focus of the grant program is to assist schools by reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and promoting a safe learning environment; providing staff development using research-based violence prevention and classroom management programs; and enhancing antiviolence efforts.

Schools can use the money for programs dealing with conflict resolution, positive behavior support, school-based diversion, classroom management, violence prevention and staff training in behavior support.
