William Merrell, chairman of the Washington County Republican Party, resigned from the post Friday.

Merrell announced that he plans to spend more time as a school director in Peters Township, where he is chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee.

“Peters is looking to upgrade all of our facilities in these next few years and the building and grounds position is taking more time than (in) the previous years, when I was not in a chairman’s position,” Merrell wrote in an email.

As county chairman, Merrell was a member of the Republican Party state committee.

Before he was elected to Peters school board, he was a member of Peters Township council, on which his wife, Monica, serves.

Jeff Foutz, first vice chairman, will be taking over as the acting chairman until elections are held in November.

Foutz is also a member of the Republican state committee.
