PITTSBURGH (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he stole the purse of a woman who acted as a Good Samaritan by letting him use her cellphone.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for 35-year-old Sherman Jones, of Ross Township, who was also arrested Wednesday on drunk driving, stolen property, and retail theft charges stemming from two unrelated incidents.

Shaler Township police have charged Jones with robbery and other crimes for the incident Tuesday in a pharmacy parking lot. That’s where police say Jones walked up to the woman’s vehicle and asked to borrow her phone. While he was doing that, police say he grabbed the woman’s purse from the front seat of her vehicle.

Police say the woman chased Jones by driving through a yard, though he escaped before his arrest on Wednesday.
