Calkins Media co-owner Smith dies at 74

LEVITTOWN, Pa. (AP) – Calkins Media co-owner Carolyn Calkins Smith died after a long battle with cancer. She was 74.
Smith was a reporter and copy editor before taking an ownership role in the company that owns six newspapers and three television stations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and Alabama. She died Thursday.
Calkins Media CEO Mark Contreras tells the Bucks County Courier Times the company is inspired by Smith’s example of community service and family stewardship.
Smith’s father started the company in Uniontown in 1937. She was drawn to journalism as a teenager, writing social columns and training as a Courier Times proofreader before her reporting career.
Smith also served as chairwoman of the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown and served with more than a dozen other community organizations.
