A Chartiers Township man died Sunday morning after he lost control of his car, drove over a hillside and crashed into a creek in Burgettstown.

Phillip S. Wolanski, 43, of Montclair Road, died in the crash and was found by a passing motorist, who saw his car in the creek about 10:30 a.m., Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco said.

Wolanski was driving east on Langeloth-Eldersville Road when his car crossed the center line, struck a guardrail multiple times, drove up a hillside and went airborne, Warco said. The car landed on Plum Run Road and traveled another 25 feet into the creek bed, Warco said.

Authorities do not know when the crash occurred and are trying to determine where Wolanski was before the crash. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A cause of death is pending an autopsy, Warco said.

McDonald police are investigating and were assisted by Burgettstown and Slovan fire departments.

A state police accident reconstructionist was also at the scene to aid investigators.
