The sub-zero temperatures that blew through Western Pennsylvania this week were a frigid burden to most people, but we at the Observer-Reporter decided to turn it into a fun experiment in our courtyard.

We tried a variety of cold weather science experiments, including freezing a wet T-shirt, turning boiling water into snow, blowing icy soap bubbles and attempting to morph a banana into a hammer.

If you attempt to duplicate the boiling water experiment, be safe: Wear gloves to protect your hands from the boiling water, and don’t throw it toward anyone. We conducted our experiment at around zero degrees Fahrenheit. In the event you miscalculate the temperature, you risk burning yourself and others.
