Parents in the Canon-McMillan School District area are asked to be on the lookout for a suspicious man who spoke to an 11-year-old girl waiting for her bus Monday.

North Strabane Township police Detective John Wybranowski said an older white man in a red or burgundy truck pulled into the girl’s driveway in the 2200 block of Hill Church-Houston Road about 10 a.m. While still in his vehicle, he asked the girl if she missed her school bus.

The mother, who was standing in the garage watching her daughter, told police her daughter backed away from the truck and told the man she had not missed her bus. The school district was operating on a two-hour delay Monday.

The man then reportedly told her he once had a daughter like her, but she is now grown up. At that time, the girl’s school bus pulled up, and the man drove away.

“There was no attempt made by this individual operating the vehicle to lure the child into the vehicle,” Wybranowski said. “However, due to the fact that he interacted with her at the bus stop, (that’s) our main concern.”

Wybranowski said police notified the school district of the suspicious activity and have been working with school officials to prevent these situations from happening in the future.

“We wanted to try to identify who this individual is so we can find out why he was talking to her,” Wybranowski said. “We wanted to be cautious. We wanted to make a notification to the school district to notify all of the students … so that they can be aware while they’re at their bus stops.”
