California Borough police officer to stand trial in prisoner assault

CHARLEROI – A California Borough police officer will face trial in Washington County Court on charges he assaulted a shackled and handcuffed detainee in a holding cell in November.
District Judge Larry Hopkins in Charleroi ruled there was sufficient evidence presented Thursday during a preliminary hearing for Officer Justin T. Shultz, 29, to send the official oppression and simple assault case to trial, court records show.
Shultz, of Connellsville, was removed from the police schedule after being accused of mistreating Adam Logan, 27, of Richeyville, about 3 a.m. Nov. 9 at the borough police station. Logan was being held as a suspect in a robbery when video surveillance reportedly captured Shultz push him a couple times and then slam him between a wall and bench in the cell.
The case was transferred to Hopkins from the office of District Judge Joshua Kanalis, who once served as a California police officer.
Shultz’s attorney, Noah Geary of Washington, declined to comment on the case.
