CARLISLE – A former Pennsylvania funeral director has been sentenced to five to 10 years in state prison for stealing from more than 100 people who paid for their funeral arrangements in advance.

Fifty-two-year-old Boyd Myers Jr., who ran the former Myers Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg, also was ordered Thursday to pay $512,000 in restitution to 102 victims.

He pleaded guilty in September to charges including theft by deception and insurance fraud.

Cumberland County prosecutors said Myers violated state law by not setting aside money for pre-arranged funerals in insurance, trust or escrow accounts.

Myers’ attorney said his client was putting that money back into the business to keep it running.

The funeral home was sold and is under new ownership.
