Smith Township will hold two public hearings Monday regarding an application by a coal mining company and a rezoning request from natural gas drilling company Range Resources.

Thomas Schilinski, chairman of the board of supervisors, said the first hearing at 5 p.m. at the municipal building will address a coniditional use application by S&K Energy for coal removal on Station Road. Schilinski said the company, formerly known as Mulligan Mining, is currently mining another section of Station Road.

He said he does not believe residents would be directly affected, although they may have concerns about the rebonding of the road if the company’s application is approved.

The second hearing will address an application by Range Resources to amend the township zoning district map in order to permit a gas well on property formerly owned by David Carns. If approved, a portion of the property would be rezoned from R-1 Suburban Residential to A-1 Rural Residential. An adjoining property owned by the Colussy family also would be rezoned into the A-1 district. After the public hearings conclude, supervisors will hold a special business meeting to consider approving the conditional use application and amending the zoning district map.
