Weapons policy for state system universities needs more work

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is hearing from supporters and opponents of a proposed policy to allow weapons in limited areas of its 14 campuses, but officials say they need more time to work on the plan.
The system’s executive vice chancellor, Peter Garland, said after an hour-long session on the policy in Harrisburg Thursday that the proposal will not be going before the system’s board when it meets later this month.
The draft policy would ban weapons in all buildings, at sports and similar events and at outdoor class meetings and assemblies. Guns would be allowed, for example, in outdoor areas and parked cars.
Public comments indicate that the board will have to weigh support from gun rights advocates against opposition from faculty members and others.
