With the hopes of creating a stronger community and a stronger faith, 25 churches throughout Washington will gather Sunday for a ministerial unity service.
Pastor Patricia Cherry and her husband, Walter, are among the long list of organizers. Cherry, who co-pastors New Dominion First Kingdom Ministry with her husband, said the nondenominational service is open to everyone in the community.
“We want to share the love and light of Jesus Christ, and we want to see the community come together,” Cherry said.
Cherry said it’s been years since local churches shared a service. The service is being supported by the Washington Ministerium, a group of 25 Christian pastors from different churches. The grouped formed this summer.
“We wanted an event where we could all be under the same roof and meet one another,” she said. “This will be a nice way to meet people.”
The service will begin at 5 p.m. at the Washington High School auditorium. Refreshments will be provided. The organizers chose the location because it was a neutral setting.
The Rev. Stuart Brobey, pastor of Church of the Covenant, said he hopes the service will provide additional opportunities for community members to come together and address problems within the community.
“A unity of churches helps to create a community,” he said. “A community is then able to address various problems, like housing issues. We want to be a positive force.”
Brobey, who is also an organizer, said there is a general consensus that this will be a kickoff type of event.
“It all begins with this service,” he said. “We are hoping this will become an annual event. I’m hoping we will get about 200, 300 people to attend, and I think it will grow over time.”
