CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The University of Charleston is shutting down its main campus until further notice because of a lack of clean water.

Beginning Monday, all activities at the Charleston campus are cancelled until further notice.

University President Ed Welch said Sunday in a news release that the school’s campuses in Beckley and Martinsburg will begin classes as scheduled on Monday. These campuses aren’t affected by a chemical spill that contaminated the public water supply in a nine-county area that includes Charleston.

Welch says about 60 students at the Charleston campus are being housed at a residence hall in Beckley until water service returns. These students had to return to school early.
