To celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, the NAACP Washington Unit will hold its annual celebration service Sunday at Nazareth Baptist Church, 123 N. Lincoln St.
The service will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature speakers and choirs from the Washington area.
“This service will not only honor his influence and courage, but challenge the ideas of his words, which carry on today,” said the Rev. Harold Knappenberger Jr., religious affairs chairman of the NAACP Washington Unit Executive Committee. “That’s the spirit of the service. As philosopher William James said, ‘The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast.’ That’s what MLK Jr. did, and that’s what we’re honoring.”
The service is open to the community and is expected to run about an hour and a half. Refreshments will be provided afterward.
Knappenberger is looking forward to this year’s keynote speaker, the Rev. Samuel Ware. Ware is pastor of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington and has been active in community development and ministry for more than 40 years.
“One thing that is different this year is that we are using local speakers rather than going out of the area,” he said. “People from the area that MLK Jr. inspired. Through his service and background in civil rights, that’s why he was chosen.”
