Smith Township officials approved a mining company’s conditional-use application during a special business meeting Monday. The unanimous vote by the board of supervisors came directly after two public hearings were held.

Supervisors voted to approve S&K Energy’s application to mine coal along Station Road. Board Chairman Thomas Schilinski said the company, formerly known as Mulligan Mining, is currently mining on the other side of Station.

Schilinski said nothing will change, except that the company needs to bond about a half-mile stretch of road.

The second hearing addressed an application by Range Resources to rezone a portion of R-1 Suburban Residential property to A-1 Rural Residential in order to permit a gas well on property formerly owned by David Carns. Schilinski said no residents complained about the proposed rezoning, and the board will vote on the matter in upcoming weeks.
