Historic status rejected for Pittsburgh produce terminal

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh City Council has rejected historic designation for the city’s landmark produce terminal that could help spare the structure from possible partial demolition in a riverfront development project.
Council members fell short of the six votes needed for the designation Wednesday in a committee hearing on the fate of the Strip District’s Fruit Auction & Sales Building.
Buncher Co. has an option to buy the terminal from the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority for $1.8 million as part of its proposed $450 million Riverfront Landing residential and office project.
But the company has agreed to put its plan to demolish the western third of the structure on hold while officials meet with the mayor on possible alternatives.
