Snow causes hazardous local driving conditions, several vehicle accidents

A snowstorm Friday night caused treacherous driving conditions and resulted in dozens of accidents on Washington County roads.
“Road conditions were horrible,” said Chad Brewer, captain of the North Strabane Township Fire Department. The department responded to at least three accidents, including one in which a woman was trapped in a car on a hillside. No one was injured in the accidents.
Washington County 9-1-1 said despite the number of accidents, no serious injuries were reported .
“It just came down so fast, I don’t think anyone was expecting it. It just came out of nowhere,” said Brewer.
A three-vehicle accident on state Route 837 in Carroll Township at 6:38 p.m. snarled traffic, and multiple crashes were reported on Venetia Road in Nottingham Township.
Other accidents included a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in South Strabane Township and a vehicle that slid off the road on Freeport Road, Fallowfield Township. Several cars crashed into guard rails, and a vehicle on Route 40 veered off the road and into the woods.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, intense snow showers between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. quickly covered roads with snow and resulted in reduced visibility.
PennDOT and public works crews were deployed to spread salt and clear the roads.
