FRIEDENS (AP) – PBS Coals has laid off 40 more workers, bringing the southwestern Pennsylvania coal company’s employment to less than half what it was in 2011.
The (Somerset) Daily American reported the Friedens-based coal firm now has fewer than 450 workers. The company had 1,000 employees in 2011.
Lori Mason, the company’s vice president of legal, human resources and government affairs, blamed the depressed coal market for the cuts. The company operates five surface mines, five deep mines and two coal preparation plants which produce coking coal for steel manufacturers and steam coal burned at electric power plants.
The company laid off 134 employees in May.
PBS Coals was acquired for $1.3 billion by Severstal, Russia’s largest steelmaker, in 2008. PBS Coals had 600 workers at the time.
