A Mon Valley man was charged by state police Friday with possessing a large amount of heroin during a traffic stop a day earlier off Interstate 70 in South Strabane Township.

Police said they also seized $7,945 from Charles J. Shider Jr., 23, of Belle Vernon, after they pulled over the vehicle he was driving about 2:10 p.m. in a park-and-ride lot for disregarding traffic lanes on I-70 West.

Police accused him of having 857 packs of heroin, a small amount of marijuana and 11 1/2 Xanax tablets in the vehicle.

Shider was remanded Thursday afternoon to Washington County jail on a probation violation and arraigned on drug and related charges Friday before District Judge Jay Weller, who set bond at $25,000.

Police charged him with possession of heroin with intent to deliver, drug possession and possession of a small amount of marijuana and also cited him for not wearing a seat belt, driving while his operating privileges were suspended or revoked and disregarding traffic lanes.

Shider also was held on a bench warrant for failure to show up for his October arraignment in Washington County Court in a fraud and motor vehicle violations case filed by Charleroi Regional police.
