WAYNESBURG – Warden Harry D. Gillispie said Wednesday Greene County jail received a temporary occupancy permit for its new kitchen Monday and the staff wasted little time in preparing the first meal – Tuesday morning breakfast.
Construction on a new $592,000 kitchen began last August after the county’s lease with the Corner Cupboard Food Bank expired.
“Things are working out well,” Gillispie said, and told members of the county prison board the final permit should be issued shortly once a final inspection is made.
County Commissioner Blair Zimmerman said he visited the kitchen this week and referred to it as a “professional-looking facility.”
Gillispie also reported the county jail continues to house inmates from Fayette County, which paid the county $13,950 for inmate costs in December.
“We expect to receive six more inmates from Fayette County this week, and that will bring the number up to 21,” he said. Greene County jail’s current inmate population is 77, representing 55 males, 15 females and seven weekend males.
The prison board also reorganized. County Commissioner Blair Zimmerman was re-elected chairman; Commissioner Chuck Morris was re-elected vice chairman; and District Attorney Marjorie Fox was re-elected secretary.
The prison board will continue to meet the third Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. in the public meeting room of the county office building following the commissioners’ agenda meeting, except for August and November when the meetings will be held the second Wednesday.
Meetings in March, June, September and December will be held at noon at Greene County jail.
