EBENSBURG (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to 15 to 40 years in the baseball bat slaying of his estranged girlfriend’s son.
Fifty-two-year-old Gregory Conzo of Summerhill pleaded guilty in December to third-degree murder in the November 2012 beating death of 37-year-old Michael Pcola.
Authorities said Conzo was arguing with Pcola’s mother at a Cresson home and used an aluminum bat to strike the son, who died two days later at a Johnstown hospital.
The 15-year minimum term was longer than the 10-year minimum sought by the defense for Conzo, who said he acted in self-defense.
Judge Patrick Kiniry said the defendant always appeared remorseful, but a county agency report indicated he was “abusive, controlling.”
Two of the victim’s sisters said he had been an abusive boyfriend to their mother.
