CARMICHAELS – Student council members in the Carmichaels Area Elementary School reached out to its sister school in West Virginia, which was affected by the recent water contamination issues.

A $200 check from the student council will be delivered by employees of Energy Corporation of America to Chamberlain Elementary School in Charleston, W.Va., to aid in the purchase of bottled water for its students.

Chamberlain provides instruction for students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade with a student body of roughly 235 students.

They became the sister school of Carmichaels Elementary School through the Healthy Living Program offered in the districts by ECA.

The water in Kanawha County, where Chamberlain Elementary School is located, and eight other surrounding counties serviced by West Virginia American Water, was contaminated Jan. 9 by a chemical spill.

Water was supplied to the districts by the National Guard until districts in nine counties decided to close for several days while a state of emergency was in effect.

Students in the Kanawha County schools returned to class Tuesday but bottled water continues to be used and cafeteria foods must be prepared without using tap water.

The district calendar will be extended into late May to reflect the days missed.

The chemical spill occurred at a Freedom Industries’ Etowah terminal tank farm, just upstream from the water company’s regional drinking water intake.
