Pa. state senator proposes changes to Penn State

HARRISBURG – A legislative proposal would decrease the size of Penn State’s board of trustees from 30 to 23 members.
Sen. John Yudichak, a Luzerne County Democrat, introduced the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees Reorganization Act on Thursday.
Yudichak’s bill would allow eight alumni-elected members, five appointed by the governor with Senate approval, five chosen by the agriculture industry and five from business and industry, selected by a trustee committee.
Trustees would generally serve three-year terms.
Yudichak says a smaller board would improve engagement, efficiency and responsiveness.
Penn State’s board has been considering changes to its governance structure and recently held a board retreat with a consultant on the topic.
It has adopted term limits, allowed public comment at meetings, and removed the university president and state governor as voting members.
