California University of Pennsylvania will lower its undergraduate tuition for members of the active duty military enrolled in its global online program by $26 per credit to match the $250 government reimbursement they receive per credit to taking college classes. A similar incentive will be offered at Cal U.’s graduate schools.

The board of governors for the 14 state-owned universities approved the pilot program Thursday, along with several at other schools that relate to differentials in tuition and pricing.

The reimbursement rate also applies to eligible dependents and spouses of members of the active duty military, university records show.

Ninety students at the university currently qualify for the savings, and it’s projected university revenues will decrease by nearly $15,000 as a result of the program. The university, however, expects to experience a 10 percent increase in enrollment as a result of the incentive and a 5 percent net gain in revenue in two years.

If the program isn’t successful by 2016, Cal U. indicated it’s committed to keeping the reduced rate in place until the students enrolled in the pilot project compete their programs.

The discount applies to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves.
