MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – A state lawmaker from Monongalia County was hospitalized Saturday with a gunshot wound to the leg, House Speaker Tim Miley said.
Miley told the Associated Press a daughter of Delegate Anthony Barill informed him the 80-year-old Barill was shot early Saturday during a “family situation.”
Ruby Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Amy Johns said Barill was in fair condition. Both Miley and Johns declined to release further details.
A Morgantown police statement didn’t mention Barill but said the department was investigating an “unattended death” in the city’s Woodburn area.
A county emergency services log shows a shooting occurred at Barill’s Morgantown home and that officers arrived at 1:50 a.m. The EMS log also shows a medical examiner responding to the residence and another EMS unit being sent to a funeral home.
Messages left at the Barill home and with Morgantown assistant police chief K.P. Clark weren’t immediately returned Saturday.
A Democrat, Barill is serving his second term in the House. He is a former sheriff and magistrate in Monongalia County.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tony and the rest of his family,” Miley said.
Other state officials and lawmakers posted concerns for Barill on social media.
